A cheering standing ovation was the response when the Rev. Laurel Hallman, Senior Minister of First Unitarian Church of Dallas, officially announced to her congregation on Sunday, January 6 that she will be a candidate for President of the UUA in the elections to be held at General Assembly 2009 in Salt Lake City, UT. The congregation had earlier embarked on a transition plan for Rev. Hallman's pending retirement after over 20 years in her position and were excited to hear her hopes to serve the UU faith in a new venue when she departs in June 2009.
First Unitarian Church of Dallas is no stranger to UUA elections having seen its previous minister the Rev. John Buehrens serve as UUA President from 1993 to 2001. As chief executive officer, the UUA President is responsible for the programs and administrative policies of the Association and is the Association's chief spokesperson. Currently the only other announced candidate in the race is the Rev. Peter Morales, former director of UUA District Services and currently minister of Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, Colorado.
Rev. Hallman has also launched her campaign website www.laurelhallman.com.
